Download now and immerse yourself in the ultimate dominoes experience with ten different games in one app, including the popular Mexican Train! Dominoes, also known as dominos, is a captivating board game played with rectangular tiles known as "dominoes."
Domino sets, often referred to as decks or packs, traditionally comprise 28 pieces, colloquially called bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Each domino is a rectangular tile divided into two square ends by a line. These ends are either marked with spots or left blank. Domino sets serve as a versatile gaming tool, much like playing cards or dice, enabling a variety of games. Extended sets, such as double 9 and double 12, are used for games like Mexican Train and Chicken Foot. Each country boasts its own favorite dominoes games: England enjoys Muggins (All Fives), Scandinavian countries play Bergen, Mexico loves Mexican Train, and Spain plays Matador.
The origins of dominoes trace back to the Song Dynasty in China, with the game making its way to Italy in the 18th century. The evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains a mystery.
The simplest domino variant is a two-player game using a double-six set. The 28 tiles are shuffled face down to form the stock or boneyard. Each player draws seven tiles, leaving the rest unused. Players position their tiles on-edge to keep their values private while still visible in terms of quantity. The game starts with one player laying down a tile, which varies by game. In Muggins, it's the highest double (6-6); in Bergen, it's 0-0; and in Mexican Train, each round begins with the next lower double. This initial tile sets the line of play, where subsequent tiles must match on either end. Players take turns extending the line until one wins by playing their last tile or the game blocks, with the last player to move scoring points from the opponent's remaining tiles.
Points are scored during gameplay for specific configurations or moves. Scoring games often use draw game variations. In Muggins (All Fives), points are awarded when the open ends of the layout sum to multiples of five. In Bergen, scoring occurs when the open ends match. If a player fails to call "domino" before placing a tile, and another player calls it afterward, the first player must draw an additional tile. In Mexican Train, the double zero domino scores 50 points.
In draw games, players can draw tiles from the stock before playing. The game's score is determined by the pips in the losing player's hand and the stock, typically leaving two tiles in the stock. Often referred to simply as "dominos," this game offers flexibility and strategic depth.
