"Adult's First LEGO Buy: Mario Set, No Regrets"

by Joseph Apr 09,2025

As a practical person, my approach to spending money is quite straightforward. I focus on essentials and occasionally treat myself to a video game when it's on sale. However, it wasn't until last year that I considered indulging in something as seemingly frivolous as a LEGO set. Growing up, I enjoyed building LEGO sets, but as I aged, I drifted away from this hobby.

A significant factor deterring me from LEGO sets is their cost. While there are some affordable options under $25, sets linked to popular movies or video game franchises often carry a steeper price tag. It took me a while to justify the purchase of the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, which had been on sale since October of last year for under $50. Finally, I decided it would make a unique addition to my desk, replacing a typical potted plant.

As a long-time fan of Mario games, this set seemed like the perfect way to showcase my affection for the franchise. While LEGO's botanical collection offers beautiful flower sets that would enhance my desk, none capture the whimsical charm of the Piranha Plant.

Not only do I love the final product, but the building process was equally enjoyable. I completed it in one afternoon, yet it was challenging enough to keep me engaged throughout. Currently, it's the only LEGO Nintendo set I own, but my experience has me considering adding more to my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

As mentioned, LEGO sets can be pricey, especially with new adult-targeted sets released annually, often priced at $200 or more. It's easy to get carried away and overspend on these delightful plastic bricks. However, the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, priced under $50, was within my comfort zone. The hours spent building it and the joy it brings me daily justify the cost. Is that joy worth more than $50? Absolutely, but that's my spending limit.
