Blizzard's approach to the Diablo franchise prioritizes player engagement across all titles. This strategy was highlighted following the release of Diablo 4's first expansion.
Diablo 4's remarkable success as Blizzard's fastest-selling game underscores the company's commitment to long-term support. In a recent VGC interview, Diablo series head Rod Fergusson and executive producer Gavian Whishaw emphasized that sustained player interest across all Diablo games—from the original to Diablo 4—is a key objective. The philosophy is simple: players enjoying any Blizzard game is a win.
Fergusson stated that Blizzard rarely discontinues game support, citing the continued availability of Diablo, Diablo 2, Diablo 2: Resurrected, and Diablo 3 as examples. He further clarified that the company isn't concerned about player distribution across different Diablo titles. The success of Diablo 2: Resurrected, a remaster of a 21-year-old game, demonstrates the enduring appeal of the franchise. The overarching goal is to maintain a thriving Blizzard gaming ecosystem.
Blizzard's strategy isn't about actively shifting players from one game to another. Instead, the focus is on creating compelling content for Diablo 4 that naturally attracts and retains players. Continued support for older titles like Diablo 3 and Diablo 2 reflects this commitment to player choice and overall franchise health.
