Chrono Trigger Marks 30 Years with Multiple Releases Planned

by Alexis May 15,2025

Square Enix has proudly announced that the iconic JRPG, Chrono Trigger, has reached its 30-year milestone. This significant anniversary is being celebrated with the promise of various projects set to be unveiled over the coming year. While the details of these projects remain under wraps, the language used in the announcement hints at ventures that might stretch beyond the game itself, igniting excitement and speculation among fans.

The community has been eagerly awaiting a comprehensive remaster or a modern console release of Chrono Trigger. Despite its revered status as one of the greatest JRPGs ever created, the game has not yet seen a full-fledged remake or a re-release on newer PlayStation consoles since its initial PS1 port in 1999. While the game has found its way to PC and mobile platforms, a definitive modern version continues to elude fans. However, given Square Enix's history of revisiting their classic titles, hope remains high.

In the meantime, the only confirmed event for the anniversary celebration is a special livestream concert featuring Chrono Trigger's legendary soundtrack. This concert will be broadcast live on YouTube starting on March 14th at 7:00 p.m. PT and will continue into the early hours of the following morning.

Chrono Trigger 30th Anniversary Concert

For those new to the series, Chrono Trigger is a groundbreaking time-travelling RPG developed by an all-star team including Final Fantasy's Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest's Yuji Horii, and Dragon Ball's Akira Toriyama. Originally launched in 1995 for the Super Famicom and SNES, the game follows protagonist Crono and his companions as they traverse various time periods, from a prehistoric era filled with dinosaurs to a dystopian future threatened by an alien force. Players recruit allies, alter the course of history, and confront one of the most memorable final bosses in video game history.

As Chrono Trigger marks its 30th anniversary, while there's no official word yet on a remake or a console port, Square Enix's statement suggests that more could be on the horizon. Fans are encouraged to keep an eye on Chrono Trigger's official X page for the latest updates on upcoming projects and announcements.
