Destiny 2's Year of Prophecy: Key Details for Guardians

by Logan May 14,2025

Get ready, Guardians — Bungie has just announced an exciting lineup of updates for its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, under the banner of the "Year of Prophecy." This year promises four significant content updates, including two paid expansions and two major updates accessible to both paying and free players.

Kicking off the year is Rite of the Nine, a free update that reimagines dungeon diving for both veterans and newcomers. Available now, this update features familiar dungeons such as Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep, but with unique twists and refreshed dungeon weapons, allowing players to reconnect with Orin.

On July 15, the first paid expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, will launch, marking the beginning of a multiyear saga involving the mysterious Nine. This expansion introduces new characters, Lodi and Ikora, and takes players to a new destination, Kepler, inspired by Destiny 2’s challenging dungeons and designed to encourage exploration and discovery. Players can expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities.

Simultaneously, on July 15, major core game innovations will be introduced, including revamped armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting and a new activity selection screen, the Portal. This screen will allow players to easily select from Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops, tailored for solo players seeking short, self-contained gameplay sessions. Additionally, 50 new modifiers will enable deeper gameplay customization, with curated activity rotations ensuring fresh content.

On September 9, the Ash & Iron update will be released, followed by the second expansion, Renegades, on December 2. The year will conclude with the Shadow & Order update on March 3.

Destiny 2: Renegades draws inspiration from the legendary Star Wars universe, merging Destiny’s storytelling and gameplay with themes from the iconic sci-fi franchise.

This news comes after Bungie laid off 220 staff members in July 2024, less than a year after another round of 100 layoffs. Despite these challenges, Bungie remains active on multiple fronts, including the upcoming Marathon reboot, which has shown promising early signs in its alpha state, as highlighted in IGN's hands-on preview.
