George R. R. Martin, the celebrated author behind the world of *A Song of Ice and Fire* and a key figure in the creation of *Elden Ring*, has dropped the strongest hint yet that an *Elden Ring* movie may be on the horizon. However, he also acknowledged a significant obstacle to his potential involvement in the project: his ongoing work on *The Winds of Winter*, the long-awaited sixth book in his *A Song of Ice and Fire* series.
Martin, who collaborated with FromSoftware to craft the rich history and world of *Elden Ring*, one of 2022's top-selling games, was asked by IGN during IGN Fan Fest 2025 about his interest in a sequel. While he sidestepped the question about *Elden Ring 2*, he tantalizingly mentioned the possibility of an *Elden Ring* movie. "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of *Elden Ring*," Martin revealed.

This isn't the first time Martin has teased the idea of an *Elden Ring* adaptation. FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has also expressed openness to the concept, stating in an interview with *The Guardian* that he would welcome an adaptation, such as a movie, if a "very strong partner" were involved. Miyazaki emphasized the need for trust and agreement with such a partner to successfully translate *Elden Ring* into a different medium.
Despite the excitement around a potential *Elden Ring* movie, Martin pointed out that his commitment to finishing *The Winds of Winter* could limit his involvement. "We'll see if that [the *Elden Ring* movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know," he said. "I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
The wait for *The Winds of Winter* has been agonizingly long for fans, with the last book, *A Dance With Dragons*, released in 2011. That same year saw the debut of HBO's *Game of Thrones*, which brought even more attention to Martin's fantasy universe. Martin himself has acknowledged the delays, humorously noting in December that he was "13 years late" and expressing uncertainty about ever finishing the series.
Regarding his contribution to *Elden Ring*, Martin detailed his role in worldbuilding, explaining how he helped FromSoftware create the game's backstory. "When they came to me, FromSoftware, they wanted the world... So where did that world come from? And I've done a lot of world building... And I like doing world building. So what had happened 5,000, 10,000 years before the current day action in *Elden Ring* that led them to that place? And I had some ideas about the magic and the runes," he shared with IGN.
Martin also hinted that there might be more material from his worldbuilding efforts that could be used in future *Elden Ring* projects. "Yeah, I think especially when you're world building, there's always more that you actually see on the screen," he noted, comparing it to other epic fantasies like Tolkien's works, where extensive histories exist beyond what is shown in the main narrative.
