Evangelion Crossover Disappoints NIKKE Fans

Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE collaboration with Neon Genesis Evangelion fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The August 2024 crossover event, featuring Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato, encountered several setbacks.

Where the Collaboration Went Wrong:

The initial designs for the Evangelion characters, created collaboratively by Shift Up and the NIKKE team, were deemed too suggestive by the Evangelion creators. Subsequent modifications, while satisfying the licensors, failed to resonate with players. The resulting designs, while faithful to the originals, lacked the appeal to entice players.

Player Reception and Concerns:

The underwhelming costumes weren't the only issue. Players perceived a lack of incentive to invest in limited-time characters and costumes, especially given the minimal aesthetic differences between the new skins and the base models. Asuka's gacha skin, the most expensive option, was criticized for being too similar to her default appearance.

The collaboration diluted NIKKE's established identity, which players appreciate for its bold anime aesthetic and engaging narrative. The event's uninspired designs and drawn-out nature further contributed to negative feedback.

Looking Ahead:

Shift Up acknowledges the criticism and promises to incorporate player feedback into future collaborations. The hope is that future events will deliver more compelling and engaging content.

Both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE are available on the Google Play Store. It remains to be seen if Shift Up can successfully recover from this misstep and deliver the high-quality content players expect.
