"GTA 4 Remaster Urged by Ex-Rockstar Dev: 'Niko Is Unmatched'"

by Aria May 20,2025

A former Rockstar veteran, Obbe Vermeij, has chimed in on recent rumors suggesting that a re-release of *Grand Theft Auto IV* (GTA 4) for the latest generation of consoles might be on the horizon. Vermeij, who served as a technical director at Rockstar from 1995 to 2009 and worked on GTA 4, expressed his belief that the game "should be remastered." He highlighted the game's quality and the success of recent remasters, such as *The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered*, as reasons why a GTA 4 remaster could be a hit. Vermeij also praised the protagonist, Niko Bellic, as the best in any GTA game.

The rumor about a potential GTA 4 remaster was sparked by a post from Tez2, a well-known leaker within the GTA community. Tez2 hinted that a modern port of GTA 4 could be released this year, suggesting that this project might be the reason behind Rockstar's recent decision to shut down a GTA 5 Liberty City Mod. However, it's crucial to note that Rockstar has not officially indicated any plans to re-release GTA 4. Given their current focus on *Grand Theft Auto VI* (GTA 6), a remaster of GTA 4 would be unexpected.

Vermeij speculated that if Rockstar were to remaster GTA 4, they might port it to the latest version of their Rage engine. Yet, he did not have any inside information on these rumors. Rockstar's silence on the matter, coupled with their intense focus on the development of GTA 6, suggests that a GTA 4 remaster might not be in the cards, at least not in the near future.

Rockstar could potentially outsource the remaster to an external studio, similar to what they did with *Red Dead Redemption*. However, the timing for a GTA 4 re-release in 2025 seems off, especially considering GTA 6's planned release in the fall of the same year. Launching both a remaster and a new game in the same window could split the audience's attention, which is unlikely to be Rockstar's strategy.

Some fans speculate that Liberty City, the setting of GTA 4 and inspired by New York City, might appear in GTA 6 either at launch or as downloadable content (DLC). GTA 6 is set in Leonida, a fictional state based on Florida, which includes Vice City, Rockstar's take on Miami.

As we await more news, there's plenty more to explore about GTA 6, including detailed breakdowns of what we know so far, 70 new screenshots, and expert insights on how GTA 6 might perform on the PS5 Pro.
