It wouldn't be a Nintendo console without a Zelda game, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is following suit, albeit with a twist we didn't see coming. During today's Nintendo Direct, it was revealed that Koei Tecmo is developing a new Hyrule Warriors title: a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. Fans won't have to wait long, as it's set to launch this winter.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment dives into the lore of the ancient history showcased in Tears of the Kingdom, featuring a cast of characters from that era. Expect to see Zelda alongside Rauru, Sonia, and other bearers of the Secret Stones. The game narrates Zelda's journey back in time, where she allies with the last of the Zonai, including Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, to battle Ganondorf and his forces.

The trailer unveiled the unique abilities of these champions, including Mineru piloting a mech, Zelda's magical prowess, Rauru wielding a striking sword-spear, and glimpses of other Sacred Stone wielders in action.
This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which served as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity captivated players with its unexpected take on the Breath of the Wild storyline, earning a 9/10 rating from us for being "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish." It will be fascinating to see if Age of Imprisonment also takes a creative detour from the main narrative.
