Jason Momoa, renowned for his portrayal of Aquaman in the now-defunct DC Extended Universe (DCEU), is set to make a thrilling transition to the rebooted DC Universe (DCU) by taking on the role of Lobo in the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, slated for release in June 2026. Lobo, an alien interstellar mercenary and bounty hunter known for his superhuman strength and immortality, is the last survivor of the planet Czarnia, much like Superman is of Krypton. Created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen, Lobo first appeared in Omega Men #3 in 1983.
Momoa's enthusiasm for the role is palpable, as he has cited Lobo as his favorite comic book character and expressed excitement about the aesthetic similarities between himself and the character. In an interview with ScreenRant, Momoa teased fans with a glimpse into what they can expect from Lobo's appearance in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. He emphasized his nervousness about the role but also his commitment to staying true to the character's rough and gruff nature. "Well, this is the role I've always wanted to play," Momoa stated. "That’s the comic I loved, so I'm really nervous about it. It’s kind of a no-brainer to play this character. It's pretty big. I don't want to give away too much, but I mean, we look pretty dead on, exactly like the character, and he’s pretty rough and gruff and… I'll say the bike’s really cool."
When asked about the extent of Lobo's screen time, Momoa clarified that while Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is primarily Supergirl's story, Lobo will make a notable, albeit brief, appearance. "It’s her movie, so it's great. I just come in for a little bit," he remarked.
From Aquaman to Lobo, Jason Momoa is crossing DC universes.
In January, DC co-chief James Gunn shared the first photo of Milly Alcock as Supergirl, marking the beginning of filming for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The film, which also stars House of the Dragon's Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, draws heavily from the graphic novel of the same name by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Norgueira. The story follows an alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll who seeks Supergirl's help to avenge her father's murder by the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills.
The cast of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, David Krumholtz as Supergirl's father Zor-El, and Emily Beecham as Supergirl's mother, alongside Jason Momoa as Lobo.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to be the second film in the new DCU, following James Gunn's Superman, which is slated for release this summer. The DCU's Clayface movie is scheduled to hit theaters in September 2026.
