NetEase Games is shaking up the post-launch roadmap for Marvel Rivals, aiming to keep the live service game's momentum alive by shortening its seasons and introducing at least one new hero each month. This significant shift in the content release schedule was hinted at during the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video. The video, which runs for about 15 minutes, announced that Season 2 will kick off on April 11 with the new Vanguard hero, Emma Frost. Mid-season, fans can look forward to Ultron, though his class details will be shared closer to his release. These new additions are set to bring fresh abilities to the game, but the real transformation in gameplay dynamics will start with Season 3.
In Marvel Rivals Season 3, which currently lacks a confirmed release date, NetEase plans to reduce season lengths from three months to just two. This adjustment will accelerate major content updates while maintaining the commitment to introduce a new hero every half-season. Following Emma Frost's debut next week, players will only have to wait a month and a half for Ultron, and subsequent heroes will follow at a quicker pace.
Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen, in the Dev Vision video, elaborated on the changes, saying, "Since the launch of Season 1, we've been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experiences for you all. Social media discussions have added some pressure on us to keep the game as exciting as it has been since December, and to a certain extent, we agree."
Chen further emphasized the goal of keeping the game thrilling, stating, "With our goal of keeping the audience's excitement alive just like our opening months, the real adventure with Marvel Rivals is just beginning." He highlighted NetEase's ambition to fulfill fans' fantasies about Marvel Super Heroes by exploring new game modes and introducing a diverse roster of characters. Following extensive internal discussions and evaluations, NetEase will adjust its systems to accommodate the increased content flow, with more details to be shared before Season 3's launch.
Just hours ago, NetEase pulled back the curtain on Marvel Rivals Season 2, announcing a shift from the vampire takeover theme to a new storyline centered around the Hellfire Gala. This change promises new outfits, maps, and characters, with more information to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals has been a massive success, amassing 10 million players in just three days. The free-to-play superhero team-based PvP shooter was released on December 6 across PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. On Steam, the game saw an impressive peak of 480,990 concurrent players at launch, and Season 1 in January drew 644,269 concurrent players, ranking Marvel Rivals as the 15th most-played game on Valve's platform. However, player numbers have been declining, prompting NetEase's roadmap adjustments. Despite the dip, Marvel Rivals remains one of Steam's top-played games, and the upcoming Season 2 and Season 3 are expected to revitalize interest.
