Neil Druckmann: Abby's Look in The Last of Us Season 2 Doesn't Need Video Game Bulk

The HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2 will present Abby differently from her video game counterpart, as confirmed by showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head Neil Druckmann. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Druckmann and co-showrunner Craig Mazin explained that actress Kaitlyn Dever, who portrays Abby, did not need to undergo extensive physical transformation for the role. This decision stems from the adaptation's focus on drama rather than the mechanical distinctions required in the video game.

Druckmann highlighted the unique gameplay dynamics between Ellie and Abby in the game, where Abby's physicality was designed to contrast with Ellie's. "In the game, you have to play both [Ellie and Abby] and we need them to play differently. We needed Ellie to feel smaller and kind of maneuver around, and Abby was meant to play more like Joel in that she's almost like a brute in the way she can physically manhandle certain things," he explained. However, in the HBO series, the narrative prioritizes drama over action, reducing the necessity for Abby's muscular build.

Mazin added that this change allows for a deeper exploration of Abby's character. "I personally think there is an amazing opportunity here to delve into someone who is perhaps physically more vulnerable than the Abby in the game, but whose spirit is stronger. And then the question is: 'Where does her formidable nature come from and how does it manifest?' That's something that will be explored now and later," he stated, hinting at HBO's plans to extend The Last of Us Part 2 beyond a single season.

The first season of The Last of Us covered the entire original game, but Part 2 has a more extensive storyline, leading to a planned "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes in Season 2. While Season 3 has not been officially greenlit, the groundwork for future seasons is evident.

The character of Abby has also been a focal point of controversy, with some fans expressing their dissatisfaction through harassment of Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and actress Laura Bailey. This backlash extended to threats and abuse targeting Bailey's family. HBO took precautions during the filming of Season 2, providing extra security for Dever due to potential threats. Isabel Merced, who plays Dina, commented on the situation, saying, "There's so many strange people in this world because there are people that actually genuinely hate Abby, who is not a real person. Just a reminder: not a real person."
