Following the reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2, it's clear that the partnership between Nintendo and Xbox is set to continue. Microsoft's head of gaming, Phil Spencer, recently reaffirmed his support for the Switch platform, emphasizing its role in reaching audiences beyond Xbox's traditional user base.
In a recent interview with Variety, Spencer was asked about specific projects planned for the Nintendo Switch 2. He responded by highlighting Xbox's ongoing commitment to supporting the Switch, just as they have with the original Switch. "Nintendo has been a great partner. We think it is a unique way for us to reach players who aren’t PC players, who aren’t players on Xbox," Spencer stated. He emphasized that this collaboration allows Xbox to expand its community and nurture the growth of its beloved franchises across different platforms.
Spencer also expressed his admiration for Nintendo's contribution to the gaming industry. "I’m really a big believer in what Nintendo means for this industry and us continuing to support them," he said. "And getting the support from them for our franchises, I think, is an important part of our future." His support for the Nintendo Switch 2 is not new; he previously praised Nintendo's innovative approach during the initial teasers of the Switch 2 and confirmed Xbox's intention to broaden its game distribution across multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo's consoles.
When questioned by Variety about whether the Switch 2 reveal made him eager to unveil Xbox's next console lineup, Spencer remained focused on Xbox's current strategy. "No. I think all of us in this industry should focus on our communities and the player base that we’re building," he explained. "I get inspired by what a lot of different creators do and other platform holders. But I believe in the plans that we have."
The Xbox head reiterated the company's commitment to delivering games across various platforms, including cloud, PC, and consoles. Titles like Pentiment and Obsidian's Grounded have already made their way to Nintendo platforms, and it will be fascinating to see what Xbox brings to the Nintendo Switch 2 once it launches.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to officially debut on June 5, 2025. While pre-orders have not yet started, keep an eye on our Switch 2 pre-order hub page for the latest updates on when you can secure your console.
