New Patent For Joy-Con Shows Mouse Support

Switch 2 Joy-Con Patent Points to Rumored Mouse Support Function

The highly anticipated Switch 2 introduces groundbreaking enhancements to its Joy-Con controllers, including potential mouse support. A patent published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on February 6, 2025, sheds light on Nintendo's innovative approach to the Switch 2's controllers.

This patent elaborates on the new functionalities of the Switch 2 Joy-Con, specifically emphasizing its mouse-like capabilities. The concept of the Joy-Con functioning as a mouse was teased in the Switch 2 reveal trailer, where the controller was seen gliding across a flat surface, suggesting a new way to interact with the console.

Despite Nintendo's usual secrecy surrounding the Switch 2, this patent confirms many of the rumors circulating about the Joy-Con's advanced features.

Switch 2 Joy-Con Mouse Function and New Controllers

The Switch 2 Joy-Con retains the detachable design of its predecessor, allowing for versatile gameplay options. The standout feature, as highlighted in the patent, is the Joy-Con's ability to operate as a mouse.

According to the patent, "The sensor for mouse operation detects reflected light from a detected surface, the light changing by moving over the detected surface in a state in which either the first side surface or the second side surface is placed on the detected surface."

In addition to the mouse functionality, the Joy-Con can be charged using a new docking station that can charge up to two Joy-Cons simultaneously. A new magnetic attachment also connects the Joy-Con to the console, featuring a wrist strap reminiscent of the original Switch's Joy-Con.

The patent also introduces a new set of controllers, resembling a standard controller split into two halves, each equipped with an optical sensor for mouse-like operation. These halves can be combined using a separate attachment to form a traditional controller.

It's important to note that the features described in the patent may not reflect the final product, as Nintendo has yet to officially confirm these details about the Switch 2's Joy-Con or any other related accessories.
