Ubisoft Restarts Project Maverick Development: Rumors Circulate

The extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, now taking place in the rugged wilderness of Alaska, has undergone a significant transformation. Originally codenamed Project Maverick, the game was initially envisioned as a multiplayer expansion for Far Cry 7. However, following a thorough internal review, Ubisoft decided to pivot its development direction. Despite receiving positive feedback from both employees and testers, the company's management opted to redirect most of the resources towards Project Blackbird, which is Far Cry 7. The final decision to halt the multiplayer aspect came with the reassignment of the technical team to other projects.

The responsibility for the rebooted game has now been entrusted to Ubisoft Sherbrooke, a studio known for its expertise in development support. As a result, nearly the entire original development team has shifted their focus to the next installment of the Far Cry series.

According to insider Tom Henderson (as of mid-December 2024), Far Cry 7 is set to immerse players in a gripping atmosphere of tension and desperation, where time becomes the ultimate adversary. The game's narrative will center around the harrowing ordeal of the protagonist, whose family has been abducted by a sinister conspiracy cult. This cult is conducting terrifying experiments involving hallucinogens on animals and children. Players must race against time to rescue their loved ones within a stringent 72-hour in-game window, which translates to 24 real-time hours, making time a pivotal element of gameplay that heightens the intensity and urgency of the experience.

A unique feature of Far Cry 7 will be a timer displayed on the protagonist's wristwatch, serving as a constant reminder of the ticking clock. This innovative element will not only amplify the urgency but also add pressure, compelling players to make swift and strategic decisions. Far Cry 7 is poised to offer a distinctive gaming experience where every second is critical, and every decision can lead to significant outcomes.
