The possibility of the Wind Waker HD being ported to the Nintendo Switch 2 remains open, despite the announcement that the original GameCube version will be available on the new console. Dive into the details below to understand Nintendo's stance and the enhancements Wind Waker HD brought to the classic game.
During the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2 on April 2, it was revealed that the GameCube version of Wind Waker will be available on the Switch 2. This news sparked curiosity among fans about the potential for a Wind Waker HD port to the next-gen console.
Nintendo of America's Senior Vice President of Product Development, Nate Bihldorff, addressed these concerns. In a conversation captured during a Switch 2 press event in New York and shared on the April 9 episode of Kinda Funny Games Daily, host Tim Gettys recounted his discussion with Bihldorff. When asked if the inclusion of Wind Waker on the Nintendo Switch Online service would rule out a Switch 2 port of the Wii U version, Bihldorff firmly stated, "no, all options are on the table." This leaves the door open for Wind Waker HD to potentially make its way to the Switch 2, although no final decisions have been confirmed.
Originally launched on the GameCube in 2002 in Japan and 2003 in the West, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker quickly became a beloved title. Its HD version, released on the Wii U in 2013, brought significant enhancements including a visual upgrade from 480p to HD, improved lighting, the addition of gyro controls for weapons, and faster sailing mechanics among other gameplay adjustments. Given that the GameCube library is exclusive to the Switch 2, a port of Wind Waker HD might be the only way for owners of the original Switch to experience this enhanced version of the game.
In a related development, the Nintendo Switch Online classics game libraries are now rebranded as Nintendo Classics. According to Nintendo, "Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will soon be able to play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, F-ZERO GX, and SOULCALIBUR II on Nintendo Switch 2, with more games to be added in the future." Additionally, these games will offer in-game options such as a retro screen filter and widescreen gameplay, enhancing the nostalgic experience for players.
