Pesten With Cards

Pesten With Cards is a classic Dutch card game whose name literally translates to "Bullying With Cards"—a fitting title for its playful yet competitive nature. Popular across the Netherlands, Pesten is part of a global family of similar shedding-type card games such as Mau-Mau, Crazy Eights, Uno, Shedding, Puque, Чешский Дурак, Фараон, Крокодил, Tschau Sepp, and others. The objective is simple: be the first player to get rid of all your cards. But there's a catch—when playing your final card, you must declare "Last Card" before placing it down. If you forget, you’ll be penalized with two additional cards from the stock, and your winning move won’t count!

How to Play Pesten With Cards

Players take turns clockwise. If the initial revealed card is a "Pest-card" (special action card), its effect is immediately triggered as if the dealer played it.

On your turn, play one card by sliding it onto the discard pile. You can only play a card that matches the top card by rank or suit—unless it’s a Joker or Jack, which are wild and can be played on any card. If you can't make a legal move, draw one card from the stock. If the drawn card can be played, you’ll be prompted to choose whether to play it immediately or keep it in hand.

Last Card Rule

When you're down to your final card, you must click the "Last Card" button above your hand to announce it before playing your winning move. This alerts all players that you're one card away from victory. Forgetting to do so results in a two-card penalty from the stock, and your last card won’t be accepted. Similarly, falsely declaring "Last Card" when you still have more than one card also triggers the same penalty. Pro tip: You can press the "Last Card" button at any time—even during another player’s turn—to ensure you don’t miss the moment.

To win the round, you must successfully play your last card. However, certain special cards cannot be used as your final move (see below for details).

Special Cards and Their Effects

Each card played may trigger a unique action, depending on its rank. Pesten has many regional variations, so you can customize these rules in the game settings to match your preferred style. Here’s a breakdown of the special cards and their standard effects:

• Joker: The next player must draw 5 cards. If they have a Joker, they can play it to pass the penalty forward, increasing the total draw to 10. Each additional Joker played adds 5 more cards to the pile. Drawn cards cannot be played immediately, and the turn passes to the next player.
• Two: The next player draws 2 cards. If they hold a Two, they can play it to double the penalty (now 4 cards), and so on. If enabled in settings, a Joker can be played on a Two, adding 5 to the draw count. However, a Two cannot be played on a Joker.
• Seven: After playing a Seven, you must play another card immediately. If you can’t, you must draw from the stock. Be careful—if you’re down to one card and play a Seven, you still need to say "Last Card" before following up with your final card.
• Eight: The next player is skipped. With two players, this means you get another turn—just like playing a Seven.
• Ten: All players must pass one card from their hand to the player on their left. Simply click the card you wish to give away when prompted.
