Taiko (太鼓) encompasses a diverse family of Japanese percussion instruments. While the term broadly means "drum" in Japanese, internationally it specifically denotes the traditional Japanese drums known as wadaiko (和太鼓, "Japanese drums") and the ensemble drumming style called kumi-daiko (組太鼓, "drum set"). Taiko construction methods vary by maker, and crafting both the drum body and skin can span several years depending on technique.

Taiko's origins are rooted in Japanese mythology, though historical evidence indicates their introduction to Japan via Korean and Chinese cultural exchanges as early as the 6th century CE. Certain taiko share similarities with instruments from India. Archaeological findings confirm taiko's presence in Japan during the 6th century Kofun period. Throughout history, their roles have included communication, military uses, theater accompaniment, religious ceremonies, and both festival and concert performances. In contemporary society, taiko also plays a vital role in social movements for minority communities in and outside Japan.

Kumi-daiko ensemble performance, featuring multiple drummers playing different drums, was pioneered in 1951 by Daihachi Oguchi and evolved through groups like Kodo. Other styles like hachijō-daiko emerged from specific Japanese communities. Kumi-daiko groups now thrive globally across Japan, the United States, Australia, Canada, Europe, Taiwan, and Brazil. Taiko performance incorporates technical rhythms, form, stick grips, attire, and specialized instrumentation. Ensembles commonly use various barrel-shaped nagadō-daiko along with smaller shime-daiko. Many groups enhance their performances with vocal, string, and woodwind accompaniments.
