Phỏm Tá Lả, also known as Tien Len Online, is a beloved and traditional card game deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture.
Phỏm, often called Tá Lả or Tứ Lí Khô, is a favorite pastime, especially popular in Northern Vietnam. "Tá Lả" is the Southern term, while "Phỏm" is used in the North. The objective is to strategically collect and discard cards to form melds called "phỏm" while minimizing the point total of unmatched cards in hand. Played with a standard 52-card deck, its engaging and strategic nature makes it a captivating game. It's a staple at family gatherings and holidays, perfect for fun with loved ones.
Key Terms in Phỏm (Tá Lả)
- **Phỏm**: A meld of three or more cards of the same suit in sequence, or three or four cards of the same rank.
- **Junk Cards (Rác)**: Unmatched cards that do not belong to any phỏm.
- **Ù**: When a player forms three complete phỏms (having no junk cards), resulting in an instant win.
- **Stomach (Nọc)**: The remaining deck after cards are dealt to the players.
- **Mom (Móm)**: When the game ends and a player has not formed any phỏm.
- **Take the Pin (Ăn Chốt)**: On the final turn, playing a junk card that another player picks up to complete a phỏm.
- **Send (Gửi)**: On the final turn, if your junk card can be added to an opponent's exposed phỏm, you may send it, and it won't count toward your points.
- **Compensation (Đền)**: On the final turn, if a player "takes the pin" and the next player goes "Ù," the player who took the pin must compensate. The compensation is then passed along if a sequence of three players takes pins consecutively.
+ Furthermore, if a player draws three consecutive cards from the Nọc, it is also considered a compensation scenario.
- **Re (Tái)**: After discarding, if your card is picked up, you get an extra turn to play.
How to Play Phỏm - Tá Lả
- A game requires 2 to 4 players. Each player is dealt 9 cards, with the dealer (or previous winner) receiving 10. The remaining cards form the "Nọc" (Stomach), placed face-down in the center.
- Play proceeds counterclockwise, starting with the player holding 10 cards.
- Gameplay:
+ The first player discards any card. The next player may pick it up to form a phỏm; if not, they draw one card from the Nọc.
+ After picking up or drawing, the player discards one card. The next player then has the same options.
=> This cycle continues.
- The game ends when a player declares "Ù." If no one does, it ends after four rounds, and points from junk cards determine the winner.
- Final Turn: Players must reveal all their phỏms, send any eligible cards to opponents' melds, then play their final card. Remaining junk cards are tallied for points.
Scoring Junk Cards (When No One Goes Ù):
+ The player with the lowest point total wins.
+ Aces count as 1 point, Jacks as 11, Queens as 12, and Kings as 13. Number cards are worth their face value.
+ Tied scores are broken by who revealed their hand first.
- Final Scoring System:
+ 1st Place: +6 points
+ 2nd Place: -1 point
+ 3rd Place: -2 points
+ 4th Place: -3 points
+ Player Who Took the Pin: -4 points
+ Player Whose Pin Was Taken: +4 points
+ Player Going Ù/Khan Ù: +15 points (each opponent loses 5 points)
+ Player Going Móm (Burned): Loses 4 points, which are awarded to the winner.
