The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to make a remarkable return with a fresh twist in Breakout Beyond, developed by Choice Provisions, the studio behind the BIT.TRIP series. This modern take on Atari's classic brick-breaker game retains the familiar paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a novel sideways progression. As players move from left to right, their goal remains to break bricks, with the intensity of lights and effects escalating as combos build up.
Breakout Beyond enhances the gameplay with special bricks that trigger stunning effects, from massive explosions to an actual laser cannon. The game promises 72 diverse levels, and for those seeking an endless challenge, an unlockable endless mode with a global leaderboard awaits. Additionally, the game offers a local two-player co-op mode for those who prefer not to break bricks alone.
Originally slated for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development took a turn when Atari acquired and decided to complete the project. Ethan Stearns, Atari's Senior Director of Games Publishing, expressed excitement about bringing this gem to their players, stating, "The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."
The Intellivision Amico, announced back in 2018 with hopes for a 2020 launch, has faced numerous delays and setbacks. Although Atari acquired the branding and rights to Intellivision last year, it did not include the Amico console itself.
Breakout Beyond is scheduled to launch later this year across multiple platforms, including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS, offering fans of the classic a chance to experience this innovative reimagining.
