"Ōkami 2: Capcom, Kamiya, and Machine Head Discuss Sequel in Exclusive Interview"

by Sebastian May 01,2025

Twenty years after the launch of the iconic game Ōkami, the revered goddess Amaterasu, the embodiment of all that is good and the nurturing force of our world, is poised to make a dramatic and eagerly anticipated comeback. Revealed at The Game Awards, a sequel to Ōkami is now in the works, helmed by the visionary Hideki Kamiya. Having recently parted ways with Platinum Games, Kamiya has founded Clovers, a new studio that will bring his unique vision to life, with the full backing of IP owner Capcom, which will publish the game, and the support of Machine Head Works, a studio of Capcom veterans instrumental in the Ōkami HD remake. This collaboration promises an exceptional sequel, blending the expertise of seasoned developers with fresh talents dedicated to expanding the original's vision.

While the teaser has stirred emotions and the involvement of key figures is clear, specific details about the sequel remain scarce. Questions linger: Will it be a direct follow-up? Whose brainchild was this revival, and what journey led to its inception? And crucially, was that Amaterasu we glimpsed in the trailer, or a new character?

In a bid to shed light on these mysteries, IGN recently visited Osaka, Japan, to sit down with director Hideki Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata. In an insightful two-hour interview, we delved into the heart of Ōkami, its sequel, the synergy between the studios, and their creative ambitions.

Here's a comprehensive Q&A from our interview, edited for clarity:

IGN: Kamiya-san, you've previously discussed your departure from PlatinumGames, citing a divergence in vision. You expressed a desire to create games uniquely your own. What core beliefs guide your approach to game development, and how will these influence Clovers?

Hideki Kamiya: My departure from Platinum in September 2023 was due to a shift in direction that didn't align with my vision. While I can't delve into specifics, I believe the personality of game creators profoundly impacts the player's experience. Thus, I sought an environment where I could pursue my creative goals. This led to the formation of Clovers, a decision made post-departure, inspired by conversations with like-minded individuals eager to craft games that resonate with my ideals.

IGN: What defines a Hideki Kamiya game? How would someone recognize your touch in a game?

Kamiya: I don't aim for my games to be labeled as 'Kamiya games.' My focus is on crafting unique experiences, offering players something they've never felt before. That's the essence of what I strive to achieve.

IGN: Is there a connection between Clovers and Clover Studio? Does the clover have a special significance to you?

Kamiya: Clovers is a continuation of my journey, a name I take pride in from my days at Clover, the fourth division of Capcom's development. The four-leaf clover symbolizes our original group, and in Clovers, the 'C' stands for creativity, which we cherish deeply, reflected in our logo.

IGN: It sounds like Clovers has a close relationship with Capcom. Was this partnership envisioned before the Ōkami sequel?

Yoshiaki Hirabayashi: From Capcom's perspective, we've always wanted to continue the Ōkami legacy. Kamiya's departure from Platinum presented the perfect opportunity to revive this cherished IP, a sentiment echoed by our producer Jun Takeuchi.

IGN: How did the idea for the Ōkami sequel come about? Why now?

Hirabayashi: We've long sought the right moment to bring a new Ōkami to life. Kamiya's departure from Platinum and our aligned goals created the ideal conditions for this project.

Kamiya: I've always wanted to complete the Ōkami story. Discussions with Takeuchi over the years fueled this dream, which I can now pursue with Clovers.

Kiyohiko Sakata: For everyone at Clover, Ōkami was more than just a game. Now, with all elements in place, the timing is right to move forward.

IGN: Could you introduce Machine Head Works and its role in this project?

Sakata: Machine Head Works emerged from Capcom's Division Four, sharing roots with Kamiya's journey. We're closely connected to Capcom, aiding in branding and development. For the Ōkami sequel, we bridge Clovers and Capcom, leveraging our experience with the RE Engine and the original game's team.

Hirabayashi: Machine Head Works was instrumental in the PS4, Xbox One, and Switch ports of Ōkami, as well as recent titles like Resident Evil 3 and 4.

IGN: Why choose the RE Engine for the Ōkami sequel?

Hirabayashi: The RE Engine enables us to realize Kamiya's artistic vision in ways we couldn't before.

Kamiya: It's renowned for its expressive capabilities, setting high expectations for our game's visual quality.

IGN: Given Ōkami's commercial performance, why has Capcom always wanted a sequel?

Hirabayashi: Despite its initial reception, Ōkami has a dedicated fanbase, evident in its sustained popularity and sales figures. We're committed to fulfilling the fans' anticipation for a sequel.

Kamiya: The love for Ōkami has grown over time, reinforced by fan reactions at The Game Awards and on social media. This support has been crucial in driving the project forward.

IGN: Have you assembled a dream team for this project? Are there plans to involve other former Clover members?

Kamiya: We've gathered a talented team, including some original Ōkami developers through Machine Head Works. While we're not disclosing names, our team is even more robust than before, fueled by modern skills and the passion of those who've joined us from Platinum.

IGN: You mentioned wanting a stronger team for the first Ōkami. How have you addressed that for the sequel?

Kamiya: Development is unpredictable, but with our strengthened team, we're better positioned to succeed and create a remarkable game.

Hirabayashi: We're offering three routes to contribute to this project, welcoming diverse talents.

IGN: Have any of you replayed the original Ōkami recently?

Hirabayashi: I've reviewed the DVD of cut content rather than replaying the game.

Kamiya: I wasn't aware of that DVD.

Sakata: My daughter recently played the Switch version, enjoying its guidance despite its age.

Hirabayashi: My daughter also played it, seeing it as a game of beauty and inspiration, not just combat.

IGN: Looking back at the original, what are you most proud of, and what do you want to replicate in the sequel?

Kamiya: My hometown's nature inspired Ōkami. The sequel will continue to explore this beauty alongside the game's darker themes, aiming to captivate players of all ages.

IGN: How have changes in game development and technology influenced your approach to the sequel?

Sakata: The original's visual style was challenging to achieve with PS2 hardware. Today's technology, including the RE Engine, allows us to realize our full creative vision.

Sakata: While not directly inspired, the similarities reflect our commitment to the original vision.

Hirabayashi: The trailer's music, composed by Rei Kondoh, connects to the original game's spirit.

Kamiya: The music embodies the original's essence, carried forward by Kondoh.

IGN: What inspires you currently, in terms of games, books, movies, or other media?

Kamiya: The Takarazuka stage shows, particularly the Hana group, inspire me with their unique approach to storytelling and stagecraft, which I bring into game development.

Sakata: I enjoy Gekidan Shiki's performances, valuing the live, real-time interaction with the audience, which influences our approach to interactive experiences in games.

Hirabayashi: The movie Gundam GQuuuuuuX has inspired me with its emotional depth and creative storytelling, reflecting the passion of its creators.

Hirabayashi: Personally, success would mean surpassing fan expectations and delivering an enjoyable experience.

Kamiya: If I'm proud of the final product and it aligns with my vision, then I consider it successful.

Sakata: Success is when players, both seasoned and new, enjoy the game. At Machine Head Works, success is tied to achieving the director's vision.

IGN: What are your long-term goals for your studios?

Sakata: In ten years, I hope Machine Head Works continues to create games, ensuring our legacy beyond our current roles.

Kamiya: Clovers aims to grow, attracting like-minded creators to collaborate on projects that reflect our shared vision.

Hirabayashi: Thank you for your support. We're working hard to realize our dream of creating the Ōkami sequel. Please be patient as we bring this vision to life.

Sakata: This project is fueled by our love for the series. We're working tirelessly to meet your expectations.
