"Conan O'Brien Exposes Bizarre Oscar Statue Rules for Promos"

by Zoe Apr 09,2025

In a surprising twist from the world of entertainment, former Oscars host Conan O'Brien shared an intriguing tale on his podcast, "Conan Needs a Friend," about his thwarted promotional ideas for the Academy Awards. O'Brien and his team had envisioned a series of ads featuring him in a playful domestic partnership with a towering 9-foot Oscar statue. However, their creative vision was met with resistance from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, particularly regarding the depiction of the Oscar statue.

O'Brien recounted one of his ideas where he would be seen vacuuming around the Oscar, which was lounging on a large couch. He humorously suggested lines like, "Could you at least lift your feet? Or could you at least get up and help? Load the dishwasher?" Yet, the Academy firmly rejected this concept, stating that the Oscar "can never be horizontal." O'Brien was taken aback by this rule, likening the Oscar to a sacred relic, saying, "Like, wow, this is like the thigh bone of St. Peter. This is a religious icon."

The Academy's strict guidelines didn't stop there. They also insisted that the Oscar must always be depicted "naked," dashing O'Brien's additional idea of the statue wearing an apron and serving leftovers as a housewife.

While the Academy's decisions might seem perplexing, they are within their rights to enforce such rules. It's unfortunate that we missed out on seeing O'Brien's comedic talents fully showcased in these ads. Fans are hopeful that he'll return with equally clever ideas for future ceremonies. Here's to hoping for Team Conan Oscar Host 2026!
