Rescuing Sam During "Reckoning"

As you approach the conclusion of the main quest line, you'll discover that Sam has been captured and is being held at Praguer's Camp by Brabant. The rescue takes place during the main quest "Reckoning." To free Sam, you'll need to infiltrate the camp, and you have the choice between using stealth or opting for a more direct, violent approach.

To move freely within the camp without arousing suspicion, you'll need a guard's outfit. You can acquire this by either killing a guard and stealing their attire or by looting one of the many chests scattered throughout the camp. Once you have the outfit equipped, you can explore the camp more safely in search of Sam.

When to Rescue Sam

After freeing Sam, it's not yet time to escort him out of the camp. Sam will inform you about von Aulitz, who is also being held within the camp. It's advisable to deal with von Aulitz first, then secure a horse, and finally return to Sam to safely extract him from the camp. Sam can wait safely, and handling tasks in this sequence makes the process smoother, especially since you'll need to carry him to the horse.

Von Aulitz can be found in the main section of the camp. With your guard outfit, the guards at his door will allow you entry without issue. Upon finding von Aulitz, who is already dying, you have several options: grant him a dignified death, which is the most honorable choice; kill him like a dog; or leave him to die slowly. Interestingly, choosing to leave him to die actually contributes to achieving the best ending.

After dealing with von Aulitz, return to the barn where Sam is waiting. If a guard questions you about moving Sam, simply tell them you're handling a body, which should dispel any suspicion. Then, head towards the camp's gates, turn right, and follow the perimeter until you reach the stables.
