NieR: Automata's seemingly straightforward gameplay hides a brutal rogue-like mechanic: death carries significant consequences. Losing your life can mean permanently losing valuable items and upgrades, especially impactful in the late game. But don't despair! There's a way to mitigate the damage. This guide explains what happens when you die and how to recover your lost possessions.
Death in NieR: Automata results in the loss of all earned experience points (XP) since your last save. More critically, you lose all currently equipped Plug-in Chips. While you can always find replacements, some chips are rare and expensive to upgrade, making their loss a significant setback. Respawning leaves your equipped chip slots empty, requiring you to re-equip or select a preset.
However, your lost chips aren't gone forever. You have one chance to retrieve them. Failure to recover your body before dying again means permanent loss of those chips.
Upon respawning, your priority is retrieving your fallen body. A blue body icon appears on your map, guiding you to its location. Interacting with it restores your Plug-in Chips. You then face a critical choice:
Repair: This option doesn't restore your lost XP, but transforms your previous body into an AI companion that will assist you until it's destroyed.
Retrieve: Choose this to recover your lost XP earned since your last save.
Regardless of your choice, your previously equipped Plug-in Chips are restored. You can re-equip them, overriding your current setup, or simply add them back to your inventory.
By understanding and utilizing the body recovery mechanic, you can significantly reduce the impact of death in NieR: Automata and minimize the loss of hard-earned progress.
