Divine Dilemma: Free Orpheus in Baldur's Gate 3?

by Isabella Feb 11,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3's climactic moment, players face a pivotal decision: free the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allow the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the game's outcome.

Updated February 29, 2024: This decision comes after defeating Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate. The consequences are weighty, potentially involving companion sacrifices. High skill checks (30+) may be needed to influence companion choices.

Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the game's ending.

Freeing Orpheus vs. Siding with the Emperor:

The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers). After the Netherbrain battle (within the Astral Prism), the choice is presented: liberate Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

  • Siding with the Emperor: Orpheus is assimilated, potentially upsetting Lae'zel and Karlach due to its impact on their personal quests. This grants a combat advantage, but may not appeal to players invested in these companions.

  • Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to potentially ally with the Netherbrain. The risk of party members becoming Mind Flayers remains. However, Orpheus joins the fight, and if asked, will willingly sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers.

In short: choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation; choose Orpheus if you're willing to risk it. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and Karlach.

Moral Considerations:

The "good" choice depends on your perspective. It boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. Supporting him is natural for a Githyanki character. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's directives might seem overly demanding to others. The Gith often prioritize self-preservation.

The Emperor, generally benevolent, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He acknowledges necessary sacrifices. Choosing him might lead to Mind Flayer transformation, but ensures a morally upright (albeit tentacled) outcome. Remember, multiple endings exist, allowing for potentially optimal outcomes.
