Dune: Awakening Developers Explain Sandworm Behavior

by Alexis May 18,2025

In the upcoming game *Dune: Awakening*, sandworms will play a crucial role as a natural force rather than as controllable tools for players. Unlike the traditional methods seen in Frank Herbert's original novels, where characters could summon these massive creatures using a thumper, this feature will not be available in the game. Instead, sandworms are designed as NPCs with their own set of patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors, integrated directly into the game's engine.

Players will not have the ability to summon a sandworm to disrupt enemy bases strategically. However, should a sandworm be in the vicinity, players can attempt to attract its attention by actively moving through the sand or using a thumper. It's important to note that these actions do not guarantee the presence of a sandworm in the area.

One of the iconic elements from Herbert's books, riding sandworms, as famously practiced by the Freman culture, will also be absent from *Dune: Awakening*. The developers have mentioned that this decision was influenced by pressure from the filmmakers of the Dune cinematic universe. However, they have left the door open for future content updates, suggesting that post-launch patches might include more elements related to Freman culture, possibly even worm-riding mechanics. At the moment, though, there's no assurance that this feature will be added.
