For much of its history, the *Dynasty Warriors* series has been a linear hack-and-slash experience. However, recent entries like *Dynasty Warriors 9* experimented with an open world, leading to questions about *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*. So, does it feature an open world?
No, *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* does not have an open world.
The recent trend in AAA games suggests that an open world equates to high quality, but this isn't always true. *Dynasty Warriors 9*'s open world serves as a prime example. Criticized for its vast, empty landscapes, the expansive design diluted the impact of its large-scale battles. The open world felt forced, a mechanic shoehorned into a game that didn't need it.
Thankfully, *Dynasty Warriors: Origins* avoids this pitfall. Instead of an open world, it features a condensed overworld map of ancient China. Players navigate between towns to buy weapons and items, rest at inns, and interact with NPCs to start side quests. This smaller map allows for quick traversal; crossing it takes less than a minute. While a fast travel option exists, its necessity is questionable given the map's size. Players can also discover items like Pyroxene and Old Coins, engage in optional battles to improve proficiency and recruit soldiers, and trigger cutscenes to advance the story. This streamlined approach, while perhaps unambitious, is far superior to a large, empty open world.
*Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
