EA Sports FC 25 Revamps Gameplay

Electronic Arts' soccer simulators have long been under scrutiny, and not just for their monetization practices. The technical aspects of their games have also been called into question. With the release of EA Sports FC 25, the criticism reached a boiling point, prompting the developers to take action. They've introduced a "Gameplay Refresh Update" that includes over 50 changes to the game's mechanics, aiming to address many of the community's concerns. Here's a look at some of the key changes:

  • Significant modifications to core gameplay systems, including assists, shots, goalkeeper play, and defensive strategies.
  • Fixed common issues where defenders were unrealistically catching up to the ball carrier.
  • Enhanced smoothness in attacking play, making it easier to maneuver the ball.
  • Reduced the frequency of reverse tackles and AI interceptions to improve realism.
  • Significantly lowered the effectiveness of crossing passes to balance gameplay.
  • Players now offer quicker support when playing in roles they are familiar with.
  • Improved offside detection for AI-controlled players during offensive runs.
  • Slightly better accuracy for normal and aimed shots taken from outside the penalty area under simple conditions.

Despite these efforts, the initial reception of EA FC 25 was lukewarm at best. Only 36% of the 474 player reviews at launch were positive, indicating widespread dissatisfaction. Players have been vocal about their frustrations with what they perceive as Electronic Arts' greed, alongside numerous bugs, crashes, and issues with PlayStation controller recognition. Furthermore, the game's anti-cheat system has made it incompatible with Steam Deck, further limiting its accessibility.
