The Pokémon GO universe is filled with a wide variety of creatures, from the cutest and friendliest to those that instill fear and terror. In this article, we will explore Gengar: how to catch it, its best movesets, and strategies to help you use it effectively in battle.
Gengar is a Poison- and Ghost-type fighter that was first introduced in Generation I. With its spiky quills on its back and head, it might seem friendly at first glance, but don't be deceived by its appearance. Its crimson eyes burn with a thirst for blood, and its eerie grin reveals its true nature. Gengar's true power lies in its ability to remain unseen, often hiding in the shadows and casting spells on its enemies while lurking as someone's shadow. It relishes the moment when its victim realizes the horror of its presence. This Pokémon is not a cute creature but a true devil!

One of the most common ways to catch Gengar is through raid bosses. These raids offer the chance to catch not just a regular Gengar but also its Mega form if you dare to challenge and defeat it. Another method involves exploring the wild. Given Gengar's preference for solitude and aversion to humans, it's often found in abandoned areas where people have long since left. If traveling isn't your thing, there's a simpler option: evolution. Catch a Gastly, which can only be found during dark hours (late at night after sunset or early in the morning before sunrise), evolve it into Haunter, and then into Gengar.

The best moves for Gengar in Pokémon GO are Lick and Shadow Ball. Its abilities are enhanced in foggy and cloudy weather due to its nature. While Gengar performs poorly in raids and Gym defenses, often getting knocked out early, it excels among its type and is ranked in the A-tier with the best moves of its elements. In its Mega Evolution stage, its attack power skyrockets, making it the best fighter within its category.
Gengar is also used in PvP battles. In the Ultra League, it performs well and is best used with Shadow Punch, which is effective against shields. It has decent coverage and can deal considerable damage in the current meta. However, use it with caution in the Great League due to its fragility, which puts it at a severe disadvantage. As for the Master League, it's best to avoid using Gengar due to its low CP, making it an inadequate opponent.
When using Gengar, consider its weaknesses to Dark, Ghost, Ground, and Psychic types. These create limitations, but in return, you get one of the best fighters in the current meta. Gengar is not suitable for raids and Gym defense due to its fragility.

Gengar is a powerful fighter when it comes to dealing damage, thanks to its excellent attack stats. However, it should not be used as a tank due to its fragility, as any strong attack from an opponent could turn the battle against you. Despite its high speed, Gengar falls short compared to Pokémon like Raikou and Starmie, but its wide coverage and Mega form elevate it to a new level.
