First Glimpse: Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

by Jonathan May 21,2025

Nintendo has given us our first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, building excitement ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch next month. A recent video from the Nintendo Today app not only showcases the official Switch 2 carry case but also reveals its ability to store up to six cartridges from both the original Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2.

As previously announced, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their predecessors, ensuring that the new console can play games from both generations using a single cartridge slot. However, there's a striking new feature: the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctly red, a design choice that seems to apply universally across all titles, as evidenced by the Mario Kart World cartridge featured in the video. You can view the video on the Nintendo Today app or through OatmealDome's post on X / Twitter.

The top of the cartridge now sports a Switch 2 logo on its printed design sticker, differentiating it from the original Nintendo Switch cartridges. The official Switch 2 carrying case is designed to accommodate the console with the new Joy-Con 2 attached, along with six cartridges and two Joy-Con 2 straps.

Despite the new color and logo, Switch 2 cartridges remain functionally identical to their predecessors, including the infamous foul-tasting coating intended to prevent accidental ingestion. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," explained Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta in a previous interview with GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
