A redditor, u/lommelinn, experienced a shocking incident when their Gigabyte M6880X gaming mouse spontaneously combusted while their PC was in sleep mode. The user reported smelling smoke and discovering their mouse engulfed in flames, resulting in significant damage to their room, including their modular synthesizer. Images show the mouse's top rear panel completely melted, while the underside remained relatively undamaged. The desk and mousepad also sustained melt damage.
The Gigabyte M6880X is an older wired optical mouse, powered via a standard USB 2.0 connection (5V at 0.5A), making the incident even more perplexing. The lack of an internal battery further adds to the mystery surrounding the cause of the fire.
Gigabyte officially responded to the incident on the Reddit thread, stating that they are investigating the matter and have contacted u/lommelinn to offer support. The company emphasized their commitment to customer safety.
In a follow-up post, u/lommelinn expressed their disbelief, confirming their PC was in sleep mode at the time and that they tested the USB port with a voltage meter, finding no anomalies. The cause of the mouse fire remains unexplained.
