M3GAN Re-Release: 'Second Screen' and Live Chatbot Added

by Joseph Apr 19,2025

Top horror studio Blumhouse is celebrating its 15th anniversary by bringing back the 2022 hit film M3GAN to theaters before the sequel's release. This limited theatrical engagement introduces a controversial twist by encouraging smartphone use in theaters through new interactive features.

As part of the Halfway to Halloween initiative, Shudder is set to screen M3GAN, along with Ma and Annabelle, in one-night-only events. These screenings will feature Meta's "Movie Mate" technology, allowing audience members to interact with M3GAN via a chatbot and access exclusive real-time content on their smartphones.

"Movie Mate is exclusively available to moviegoers in the theater, and the experience begins by sending a direct message to the Instagram account @M3GAN," Blumhouse explained in a statement reported by Variety. This innovative use of Meta's technology aims to enhance the 'second screen' viewing experience, building excitement for the upcoming release of M3GAN 2.0 on June 27.

Fans attending these screenings can look forward to sneak peeks, exclusive messages from the films' directors and talent, and surprise appearances in select markets. While this approach might challenge the traditional theatrical experience, it's designed to create a unique and engaging event for horror enthusiasts.

The M3GAN screening will occur in theaters across the nation on April 30, followed by Annabelle on May 7, and Ma on May 14. M3GAN 2.0 will premiere in the United States on June 27. Only time will tell how fans will respond to this innovative blend of technology and cinema, but for now, it remains a special addition to Blumhouse's anniversary celebration.
