On January 19th, a temporary suspension of TikTok's US operations unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game published by Nuverse (a ByteDance subsidiary). This resulted in a 24-hour outage before the game was restored, though in-app purchases remain unavailable.
The disruption, attributed to political risk surrounding TikTok's ongoing negotiations to sell a 50% stake in its US operations, highlights the vulnerability of apps associated with the platform. The 90-day extension granted for this sale leaves Marvel Snap susceptible to future disruptions should the agreement fail.
In response, Second Dinner Studios, Marvel Snap's developer, announced plans to explore alternative publishers and internalize certain services to mitigate future risks. An official statement on Platform X reassured players that "Marvel Snap is here to stay," emphasizing their commitment to restoring full functionality and keeping players updated. While PC players via Steam remained unaffected, many users experienced authorization issues and lamented the lack of prior warning, particularly concerning in-app purchases made before the outage.
