Minecraft Movie's Funniest Scene Inspired by The NeverEnding Story

by Skylar Apr 21,2025

Minor spoilers ahead for A Minecraft Movie.

The team behind A Minecraft Movie shared with IGN that one of the film's most humorous scenes drew inspiration from The NeverEnding Story. In this particular sequence, Jack Black's character, Steve, finds himself in a precarious situation where he must ride on Jason Momoa's character, Garrett, due to a shortage of Elytra wings. Only Garrett and Sebastian Hansen's Henry have wings, leading to a comical moment where Steve must navigate around Garrett to avoid a perilous fall. This scene, blending physical comedy with a nod to classic cinema, was more than just a quest for laughs.

Play"We definitely wanted to capture a Falkor moment from The Neverending Story, aiming for something majestic and beautiful that quickly turns chaotic," said A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess.

"It was hilarious during breaks between takes," added producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson. "Jack was perched on top of Jason, and they were in this intricate rig... Jack would start singing, as he often does, but this time he sang the theme from The NeverEnding Story and playfully acted as if he was riding Falkor."

The scene is a delightful callback, especially since Jack Black previously played Slip in The NeverEnding Story 3. For Jason Momoa, this scene was a highlight of his involvement in the film.

"I contributed to writing that scene, and Jack was all in," Momoa shared with a chuckle. "This was after Top Gun: Maverick, so I wanted to incorporate a stunt where I could hit the brakes and have Jack slide off. We were brainstorming this at the hotel, and it was just so funny that we managed to include it in the movie, and it turned out fantastic."

"There were different versions of the scene, and I'm not sure if the most daring one made the final cut," Jack Black remarked. "We opted for a family-friendly version in the end!"

"Let my hips guide you! You can't just ride me like I'm majestic," Momoa exclaimed. "I was dying laughing, man. It was incredible."
