Miyamoto on Nintendo: 'A Talent Agency with Many Talented Characters'

by Eric May 25,2025

In May of 2015, Nintendo made a groundbreaking announcement: a partnership with Universal Parks & Resorts to bring the magic of Nintendo's beloved games and characters to life in theme parks. This ambitious move signified Nintendo's venture into uncharted territories of the entertainment industry. Fast forward a decade, and this vision has materialized as Super Nintendo World, a colorful and immersive theme park experience. From Japan to Los Angeles, and now Florida, with an upcoming expansion in Singapore, these parks are filled with thrilling rides, interactive attractions, themed gift shops, and dining experiences inspired by iconic Nintendo characters.

As Universal gears up for the launch of their new Epic Universe theme park in Orlando, Florida, alongside the debut of the Donkey Kong Country expansion—the first of its kind in America—I had the privilege of sitting down with Shigeru Miyamoto. This legendary game designer, known for creating beloved characters like Super Mario and Donkey Kong, shared insights on the journey of bringing these parks to life, his collaboration with the next generation of Nintendo game developers, and his enthusiasm for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console.
