The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has taken a significant step forward by enlisting John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein as its screenwriters. Known for their work on the film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein bring a fresh perspective to adapting Hasbro's iconic board game to the big screen.
The project is being produced by Margot Robbie through her production company, LuckyChap, adding a strong creative force behind the film. Daley and Goldstein, who also recently wrote and directed the original film Mayday, have an impressive resume that includes writing credits on The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Their experience in crafting engaging narratives across various genres positions them well to tackle the unique challenges of turning a board game into a compelling cinematic experience.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a Monopoly film date back to 2007, when Ridley Scott expressed interest in directing it. In 2011, Scott enlisted writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, but their version never materialized. A 2015 attempt saw Lionsgate and Hasbro collaborating with writer Andrew Niccol, and later, in 2019, it was announced that actor Kevin Hart and director Tim Story would be involved. However, none of these plans came to fruition.
The current push for the Monopoly movie was reignited by Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro, marking a new chapter in the film's development. With Daley and Goldstein at the helm of the screenplay, and Margot Robbie's involvement, there's renewed hope that this version will finally "pass Go" and become a reality.
