PS5 Disc Drive ShortageFrustrates Fans

Persistent PS5 Disc Drive Shortage Impacts PS5 Pro Owners

The ongoing scarcity of standalone PlayStation 5 disc drives continues to frustrate gamers, particularly those who've purchased the PS5 Pro. Since the PS5 Pro's November 2024 launch, demand for the add-on drive has far outstripped supply. This is largely due to the PS5 Pro's design—it lacks a built-in disc drive, making the separate drive a necessary purchase for those wanting to play physical games.

The situation mirrors the initial PS5 launch in 2020, with scalpers aggressively acquiring and reselling drives at significantly inflated prices. Both the US and UK PlayStation Direct websites consistently show the drive as out of stock, with any available units disappearing almost instantly. While some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally offer the drive, securing one remains a significant challenge.

Sony's silence on the matter is notable, especially considering the company's proactive approach to PS5 production during the pandemic. The added cost of the drive ($80 from official sources) further exacerbates the problem, especially when combined with the PS5 Pro's already high price point. The lack of a built-in disc drive in the PS5 Pro has been a point of contention since its September unveiling.

For now, prospective buyers face a frustrating wait, hoping for increased supply and reduced demand to bring prices back to reasonable levels. The current situation shows little sign of immediate improvement.
