The narrative unfolded on social media when a passionate fan of the Borderlands series tweeted their concerns about the upcoming installment. They highlighted that the new game's visuals bore a striking resemblance to Borderlands 3 and expressed worries about a possible cut in the marketing budget. The fan also referenced the unsuccessful Borderlands 2024 movie, which faced severe backlash from both audiences and critics, including the notoriously harsh Uwe Boll. Rather than fostering a conversation with the community, Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox, initially declared he "doesn't want to see this negativity" and intended to block the user to shield himself from stress. He later revised his approach, opting instead to mute notifications from the account.
Tensions rose further when the well-known streamer Gothalion called on the developer to embrace criticism and value the perspectives of the franchise's dedicated fans. In response, Randy dismissed the feedback as "toxic pessimism" and not constructive. He went on to stress the extreme efforts developers make, saying they are "killing themselves to entertain players."
This sparked a range of reactions within the Borderlands community. Some rallied behind Pitchford, acknowledging the intense pressures developers endure. Others felt his response sidestepped meaningful dialogue and criticized his emotional reaction. Many also recalled that this wasn't the first instance of the Gearbox CEO making pointed comments on social media.
Borderlands 4 is set to launch on September 23, 2025, and will be available on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC.
