After nearly four years of silence, Riot Games has exciting news for fans of their tactical hero shooter, Valorant. The game is officially coming to mobile, with development handed over to Tencent-owned Lightspeed Studios. Although a concrete release date remains elusive, Riot has confirmed that the launch will initially target the Chinese market, with plans for a broader rollout to follow.
Valorant, often described as a blend of Counter-Strike and Overwatch, captivates players with its precise, tactical gunplay and unique agent abilities. The game's core mode features intense 13-round 5v5 matches where each player has only one life per round, interspersed with objectives like bomb defusal and planting, reminiscent of Counter-Strike's gameplay.
The collaboration between Riot and Lightspeed comes as no surprise, given their mutual ownership by Tencent. However, this official announcement is a welcome development after such a long wait for news on Valorant Mobile.
Given the dominance of the Android platform in China, it's almost certain that Valorant Mobile will be available across multiple operating systems. Beyond this, Riot has only shared that development is underway with Lightspeed and that the strategy is to start with a China-first release.
While this announcement hints at a global release, current trade issues, particularly those affecting smartphones vital for mobile gaming, may delay a worldwide launch. Riot, Lightspeed, and Tencent will likely take their time to ensure everything is set before announcing a definitive international release date.
