RuneScape: Dragonwilds took the gaming community by surprise with its early access launch, coming just weeks after its initial teaser. Dive in to discover what this unexpected early access means for players and what's on the horizon.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds made headlines with its surprise early access announcement. During the early access livestream on April 16, developer Jagex revealed that the game is now playable on Steam, a mere few weeks following its first trailer release.
The gaming community was taken aback, as Dragonwilds had only recently been added to Steam wishlists on April 1 and unveiled its first gameplay teaser on April 2. The project, first hinted at in 2022, saw alpha testing signups open late in 2024 for what was described as a "new survival game set in the RuneScape universe." The official reveal as RuneScape: Dragonwilds came on March 31, 2025.
The developers are aiming for an official release in early 2026, emphasizing their commitment to delivering a polished and engaging experience. "We want to spend the time to get everything right to ensure our players have a complete, satisfying experience that you’ll want to revisit with friends repeatedly," they stated.
Jagex Executive Producer Jesse America highlighted that Dragonwilds offers a fresh take on the RuneScape universe, tailored for both long-time fans and newcomers. "Throughout Early Access, we’ll be updating the game regularly with new content and features, while closely listening to the community to craft an iconic open-world survival game that resonates with everyone," he added.
Jagex shared an exciting roadmap for the early access phase, detailing the upcoming additions to the game. A highlight is the introduction of Fellhollow, a new region caught between life and death, ruled by the soul-eater dragon Imaru. This area is influenced by the wild anima of Ashenfall and cursed energy from the Underworld, with the iconic RuneScape character Death accompanying players on their journey.
Expect new quests, lore, gear, music, and skills in magic, ranged, and farming. The game will also introduce Lesser Dragons, new dragon slayer gear, a hardcore mode, and a creative mode. While specific dates for these updates are not set, Jagex promises continuous improvements throughout the early access period.
Players who jump into Dragonwilds during early access will be rewarded with exclusive in-game items. According to the Steam page, "Early Adopters" will receive:
RuneScape: Dragonwilds is currently available for early access on PC for $29.99. Jagex has confirmed a price increase upon the game's full release. During early access, all updates will be free, with potential paid DLC planned for post-launch.
