Sadie Sink, known for her role as Max Mayfield in Stranger Things, is reportedly joining the cast of Spider-Man 4 alongside Tom Holland. According to Deadline, Sink, who debuted in the 2016 film Chuck, will star in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie, set to start filming later this year with a release date scheduled for July 31, 2026. Both Marvel and Sony declined to comment on the news when approached by Deadline.
Speculation is rife about Sink's character, with possibilities ranging from the X-Men's Jean Grey to another iconic redheaded character from the Spider-Man universe, potentially Mary Jane Watson. This speculation arises despite Peter Parker's ongoing relationship with Michelle "MJ" Jones-Watson, played by Zendaya in previous films. Given the narrative reset in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where Peter reintroduces himself to MJ after his identity is erased from everyone's memory, Sink's role is expected to be significant.
Tom Holland, currently involved in filming Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, is slated to begin shooting Spider-Man 4 upon completion of that project, as per Deadline.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has hinted at the integration of X-Men characters into the MCU, mentioning at the Disney APAC Content Showcase in Singapore that fans would see "some X-Men players that you might recognize" in upcoming films. He further elaborated on the future role of mutants, particularly in the context of Secret Wars, which he believes will usher in a new age for the X-Men in the MCU.

Feige's comments suggest that the integration of mutants might span across several films, including Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July 2025, with more likely appearances in Phase 6 movies such as Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man 4 in 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. The success of Deadpool and Wolverine raises questions about their potential return, alongside the possibility of Channing Tatum reprising his role as Gambit.
Feige has emphasized that the X-Men will play a pivotal role in the MCU's future post-Secret Wars, indicating a major focus on mutants in Phase 7. In the meantime, Storm made her debut in the MCU in What If...? Season 3.
Additionally, Marvel Studios has added three untitled movie projects to its 2028 release schedule: February 18, 2028; May 5, 2028; and November 10, 2028. It's increasingly likely that one of these slots will be filled by an X-Men film.
