Scarlett Johansson Confirms Black Widow's Death, MCU Return Unlikely

by Michael May 01,2025

Scarlett Johansson, a veteran of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly declared that her iconic character, Black Widow, is "dead" and she appears uninterested in reprising the role anytime soon. During an interview with InStyle, Johansson addressed the future of the Avenger in the MCU while also focusing on her upcoming project, "Jurassic World Rebirth." Despite the significant role Black Widow played in Johansson's career, she seems keen on moving forward rather than revisiting Natasha Romanoff.

"Natasha is dead. She is dead. She's dead. Okay?" Johansson stated emphatically, responding to fans' persistent calls for her return. "We’re going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment." Although Johansson last portrayed Black Widow in the 2021 standalone film, the character met her definitive end in 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" by sacrificing herself to save Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye. Despite this clear narrative closure, fans continue to speculate about potential ways she might return.

"They just don't want to believe it," Johansson remarked about fans' reluctance to accept Black Widow's fate. "They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."

The MCU has a history of resurrecting seemingly dead characters, fueling speculation around upcoming blockbusters like "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Avengers: Secret Wars." These films are anticipated not only to advance the MCU's narrative but also to potentially feature numerous cameos. For instance, Robert Downey Jr. is set to transition from Iron Man to play Doctor Doom, marking his first live-action portrayal of the character in over a decade. Additionally, rumors circulated about Chris Evans returning as Captain America, though he later denied these claims, yet they continue to stir excitement and speculation among fans.

Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter, who has died twice in the MCU, is rumored to appear in "Avengers: Doomsday." With such a roster of potential comebacks, it's understandable why fans keep hoping for Black Widow's return, despite Johansson's clear stance. The wait to see who will appear in these upcoming films will extend until "Avengers: Doomsday" on May 1, 2026, and "Avengers: Secret Wars" on May 7, 2027.
