"Space Marine 2 Dev Clarifies: Not Abandoning Game Despite Space Marine 3 Buzz"

by Simon May 06,2025

The Warhammer 40,000 community was rocked by the unexpected announcement that development on Space Marine 3 had commenced, just six months after the release of Space Marine 2. This news, delivered by publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive in mid-March, raised concerns among fans about the future support for Space Marine 2.

In a reassuring blog post, both companies addressed these concerns head-on, promising continued support for Space Marine 2. They emphasized that the development of Space Marine 3 does not signal the end of Space Marine 2's lifecycle. "Space Marine 3 does not mean the end of Space Marine 2's development. Far from it. No teams are shifting over, no one is abandoning the game, and our plans to bring more awesome content to Space Marine 2 remain," the statement clarified.

The companies outlined their plans for Space Marine 2, which include the continuation of the year one roadmap and the release of Patch 7 in mid-April. Excitingly, they also announced the addition of a new class, new PvE operations, and new melee weapons in the coming months. "Trust us, there are surprises even dataminers haven’t found out about :)" they teased, hinting at more thrilling content to come.

Space Marine 3 is described as a project in its infancy, years away from release, and the announcement serves merely as the beginning of this new venture. The companies expressed gratitude for the community's enthusiasm and reiterated their commitment to delivering more content for Space Marine 2.

The new class announcement has sparked speculation among fans, with many guessing it could be the Apothecary, a class akin to a medic in the Space Marines. However, there's also hope it might be the Librarian, introducing warp-powered space magic into the gameplay. As for the new melee weapon, fans are eager to see the iconic axe from Secret Level’s Warhammer 40,000 animated episode incorporated into the game, a wish already fulfilled by modders.

The decision to move forward with Space Marine 3 aligns with the success of Space Marine 2. In a previous interview with IGN, Saber Interactive's Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits hinted at the potential for story DLC and the early conceptualization of Space Marine 3. "Our game director Dmitry Grigorenko, he has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel," Willits shared, indicating a robust future for the franchise.
