Project Zomboid's vast map encourages vehicle use, and hotwiring offers a solution when keys are unavailable. This guide details the process and skill requirements.
Successfully hotwiring allows driving as long as fuel and vehicle condition permit, bypassing the need for keys. However, Level 1 Electrical and Level 2 Mechanics skills are prerequisites, unless you choose the Burglar profession during character creation, which grants this ability regardless of skill levels.
Hotwiring Steps:
Once requirements are met, these steps initiate the automatic hotwiring process. After completion, press W to start the engine. Remember to check fuel levels beforehand.
Skill Leveling:
For non-Burglar characters, skill levels increase through specific actions:
Books and magazines found in homes and businesses (mailboxes, sheds, bookshelves) also provide skill XP. Server admins can use the "/addxp" command to directly grant skill XP. Appropriate tools (screwdrivers, etc.) are necessary for dismantling/installation. Right-clicking vehicle parts and selecting "Vehicle Mechanics" allows part removal.
