Hello fellow gamers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 4th, 2024! Summer's warmth has faded, leaving behind memories of sunshine and fun. I'm feeling refreshed and ready for autumn, and I appreciate sharing those summer days with you all. Let's dive into today's gaming news: a plethora of reviews, exciting new releases, and some tempting sales!
The Nintendo Switch has given us a second chance at many classic games, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection brings us Miles Edgeworth's captivating adventures. This collection cleverly builds upon previous storylines, enhancing the overall experience. The sequel, in particular, elevates the original, making it a must-have for fans.
The gameplay remains true to the series' core mechanics: searching for clues, interrogating witnesses, and solving intricate cases. However, the unique perspective from the prosecution's standpoint and Edgeworth's distinct personality add a fresh layer to the familiar formula. While the pacing can sometimes feel uneven, the overall experience is highly rewarding for fans of the main series. If the first game feels a bit slow, persevere – the second game is significantly better and provides valuable context.
The collection includes bonus features like a gallery mode showcasing art and music, a story mode for a relaxed playthrough, and the ability to switch between original and updated visuals/soundtracks. A helpful dialog history feature makes it easy to revisit crucial conversations.
The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection offers a compelling contrast between its two games, forming a satisfying whole. The official English localization of the second game is a significant achievement. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney game is now accessible on the Switch. If you've enjoyed other entries in the series, this is an absolute must-buy.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
A sequel to the obscure NES classic Gimmick! is a surprising but welcome addition. Developed by Bitwave Games, this sequel stays remarkably true to the original, perhaps even too much for some. Six challenging levels of physics-based platforming await, demanding precision and patience. Fortunately, an easier mode is available for those who prefer a less punishing experience.
The core gameplay remains intact, with Yumetaro's star serving as a versatile tool for both attack and puzzle-solving. New collectibles add replay value, unlocking customization options. The game's difficulty is substantial, but generous checkpoints prevent frustration from overwhelming the fun. The charming visuals and upbeat music complement the challenging gameplay.
While not excessively long, Gimmick! 2 provides a satisfyingly tough challenge. Fans of the original will be delighted, and platforming enthusiasts who relish a demanding experience should definitely check it out. However, those seeking a casual playthrough might find the difficulty overwhelming, even on the easier setting.

Valfaris: Mecha Therion takes a bold step, abandoning the action-platforming of its predecessor for a shoot 'em up style. Surprisingly, this change works well, although the Switch's hardware occasionally struggles to maintain optimal performance. Despite this, the intense action, memorable soundtrack, and creepy visuals still make for an enjoyable experience.
The game cleverly balances its weapon systems: a main gun, a melee weapon for energy regeneration, and a rotating third weapon. Mastering the rhythm of weapon switching and dodging enemy fire is key to success. The dash mechanic adds another layer of strategic depth.
While different from the original Valfaris, Mecha Therion retains its distinctive style and avoids many genre clichés. While other platforms may offer better performance, the Switch version is still a worthwhile experience.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Licensed games often cater to existing fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. The game excels in its fan service, offering a strong narrative and rewarding systems for dedicated fans. However, its appeal to non-fans is limited. The gameplay consists of a small number of repetitive mini-games, lacking the depth and variety needed for broader appeal.
Even for fans, the game's emphasis on fan service may outweigh its gameplay value. While the visuals and audio are impressive, and unlockables provide some incentive, the overall experience feels shallow and lacks longevity.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, featuring three charming 8-bit games previously unavailable in English. The package includes save states, rewind, display options, and art galleries. The full localization of all three games is a significant achievement.
The games themselves offer a varied experience. 53 Stations is charming but frustrating, Ripple Island is a solid adventure, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. While not groundbreaking, these games are worth exploring for fans of retro gaming and Sunsoft's lesser-known titles.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
A challenging run-and-gun game in the style of Metal Slug and Contra, offering both solo and local multiplayer options.
A stealth-focused game where you must evade a creepy stalker while maintaining power and avoiding traps.
A mech-based mining game where you explore, collect resources, and upgrade your equipment.
