Amazon's Wheel of Time Series Ends After Three Seasons

The Wheel of Time has come to an end on Prime Video as Amazon has canceled the series following the conclusion of Season 3.

According to Deadline, Prime Video decided not to renew The Wheel of Time for a fourth season after what the outlet described as "extensive deliberations." Reports indicate that although executives appreciated the show, they were unable to justify its production costs.

The Wheel of Time is based on the beloved fantasy book series by Robert Jordan, featuring Rosamund Pike in a leading role. While the first two seasons faced criticism from book fans for significant deviations from the source material, Season 3 managed to win over much of the fanbase and seemed poised to deliver even greater storytelling ahead.

Fans of the series will likely feel particularly disappointed by the cancellation, as a substantial portion of The Wheel of Time’s narrative remains untold. In many respects, the show was only just hitting its stride.

Nevertheless, it appears that the costs associated with The Wheel of Time were too high for co-producers Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, the latter of which is also behind the highly expensive The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

As Deadline reported:

...Season 3’s overall performance did not justify the show’s expense for Prime Video to move forward with another season, and the streaming service could not find a viable path after reviewing various scenarios and holding discussions with lead studio Sony TV, according to sources.

IGN awarded The Wheel of Time Season 3 an 8/10 rating. Our review stated: "The Wheel of Time finally realizes its full potential in season 3, delivering rich character development set within Robert Jordan’s intricate fantasy universe."

Although the television adaptation of The Wheel of Time has concluded, a 'AAA Open-World RPG' is currently in development. IGN recently spoke with iwot Studios, which holds the rights to The Wheel of Time, to learn more about the upcoming project.
