Classic Game Rebuilt with Unreal Engine Power

The developer behind Frostpunk, 11 bit Studios, has announced a new entry in the series, and it's not what many anticipated. In an April 24 post on X (formerly Twitter), the studio revealed Frostpunk 1886—a ground-up remake of the first game, now powered by Unreal Engine.

According to the announcement, this remake will introduce a brand-new Purpose Path, long-requested mod support, and additional features, all while faithfully honoring the original's legacy. The team elaborated on their vision in a detailed Steam post published on the same day.

11 bit Studios is transitioning away from their in-house Liquid Engine, which was used for the first Frostpunk. After developing Frostpunk 2 with Unreal Engine 5, the team recognized the untapped potential for the original. This inspired them to revisit where it all started. "We aim to enhance the experience with superior visuals, higher resolution, and all the capabilities Unreal Engine provides," the studio explained.

Targeting a 2027 Launch

The developers confirmed that Frostpunk 1886 is currently in active development, with a planned release in 2027. They intend for this project to serve as the perfect entry point for new players, while also delivering a deep, replayable experience that will satisfy longtime fans.

Future plans include completely new content, with potential DLC expansions. The studio expressed a desire to release games more frequently than their previous five-year cycles, starting with Frostpunk 1886. In the meantime, players can look forward to Frostpunk 2 and its significant free update on May 8, followed by a console launch this summer, as outlined in the game's roadmap.
