Andor Season 2 Explores Key Star Wars Conflict

by Daniel May 31,2025

If there’s one thing Lucasfilm has achieved with series like Star Wars: Andor and Star Wars Rebels, it’s showcasing the numerous heroes and worlds that played crucial roles in the fight against—and eventual downfall of—the Empire. While iconic planets like Yavin IV, Hoth, and Endor are familiar from the films, lesser-known locations such as Lothal and Ferrix have also emerged as vital pieces of the Rebellion’s story. Now, thanks to the first three episodes of Andor Season 2, another world has entered the Star Wars consciousness: Ghorman.

What Is Ghorman, and Why Does It Matter?

Ghorman is a planet steeped in history and significance within the Star Wars universe. First mentioned in Andor Season 1 during the episode titled “Narkina 5,” it was referenced in a conversation between Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera and Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael. For Saw, the Ghorman Front serves as a cautionary tale regarding the perils of resistance against the Empire.

In Andor Season 2, however, Ghorman takes center stage. In the season premiere, Ben Mendelsohn’s Director Krennic addresses a gathering of ISB agents, discussing a pressing issue involving the planet. He presents a propagandistic video highlighting Ghorman’s textile industry, which exports silk produced from a unique species of spider. However, beneath the surface, Ghorman holds something far more valuable to the Empire: vast reserves of calcite.

Calcite, a resource coveted by Emperor Palpatine, plays a critical role in the Empire’s pursuit of renewable, unlimited energy—or so Krennic claims. Given Krennic’s history from Rogue One, it’s reasonable to suspect ulterior motives. More likely, the calcite is destined for the Death Star project, serving as one of the essential materials slowing its completion.

The Tragedy of Ghorman

Extracting calcite in the quantities required would devastate Ghorman, rendering it uninhabitable. This raises ethical dilemmas for the Empire, which must balance its need for resources with its desire to maintain public perception. As Palpatine tightens his grip on the galaxy, he seeks justification for exploiting planets like Ghorman. Krennic proposes turning public opinion against the planet by portraying it as rebellious and lawless. To achieve this, Dedra Meero suggests engineering a faction of radical rebels to escalate tensions, creating a pretext for the Empire to intervene under the guise of restoring order.

This storyline sets the stage for ongoing conflicts in Season 2, drawing characters like Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor and Genevieve O’Reilly’s Mon Mothma into the unfolding drama. Based on what we know so far, Ghorman’s fate seems destined to culminate in tragedy and a defining moment for the Rebel Alliance.

The Ghorman Massacre

The Ghorman Massacre looms large in the background of Andor Season 2, poised to become a pivotal event in the Galactic Civil War. Historically rooted in the pre-Disney Star Wars Legends continuity, the massacre occurred in 18 BBY when Grand Moff Tarkin landed his ship on a peaceful protest, resulting in hundreds of casualties. This act of brutality galvanized public dissent and catalyzed the formation of the Rebel Alliance.

While Lucasfilm has reimagined the details for the Disney era, the essence remains unchanged: the Ghorman Massacre represents a turning point where the Empire’s atrocities inspire a surge in rebel activity. As Andor progresses, viewers can expect this event to unfold in ways that deepen our understanding of the Rebellion’s origins and motivations.
