Malcolm Reboot Justifies Dewey's Recast

by Owen Oct 03,2025

The highly anticipated Malcolm in the Middle reboot is officially moving forward with nearly all original cast members reprising their roles—except for beloved youngest brother Dewey. While Caleb Ellsworth-Clark will take over the part, original actor Erik Per Sullivan has declined to participate in the revival series.

Series star Bryan Cranston shared this development during his appearance on Dana Carvey and David Spade's Fly on the Wall podcast. "When I contacted Erik about the reunion, he was genuinely excited for us," Cranston recalled. "But when I mentioned we hoped he'd return, he responded, 'No, thank you—though I think it's wonderful you're bringing the show back.'"

Now 33, Sullivan has compelling reasons for not returning to acting. "He's currently pursuing graduate studies at Harvard," Cranston revealed with admiration. "Erik told me, 'Acting hasn't been part of my life since childhood—my focus now is entirely on academics.'"

After leaving the entertainment industry in 2006 (four years after the series concluded), Sullivan chose education over performing. Though his path diverged from Hollywood, it clearly led to remarkable achievements. The revival will reunite Cranston with co-stars Frankie Muniz, Jane Kaczmarek, Justin Berfield, and Christopher Masterson in their original roles.

With production completed last month, Disney+ will premiere this four-episode revival series—though an exact release date remains unconfirmed.
