The Donkey Kong Bananza demo is currently playable at Switch 2 kiosks in shopping malls nationwide. Learn about this exclusive preview and how Bananza connects to Donkey Kong's history.
Before its July launch, Donkey Kong Bananza has surfaced at Switch 2 demo stations in major retailers like Walmart and Target. As reported by Reddit user ZiaMonic231 on June 20, these kiosks now offer a 10-minute trial of DK Bananza using Nintendo's new Pro controller.
This development has sparked speculation about a potential surprise demo release on the Switch 2 eShop. Historically, Nintendo rarely offers digital demos for flagship titles like Super Mario or Zelda games, though fans remain hopeful for early access before the official release.
The game's Japanese website reveals 13-year-old Pauline's profile, creating timeline questions about her connection to Super Mario Odyssey. In Bananza, she's described as a singing enthusiast unexpectedly transported to the underworld and turned to stone, while Odyssey portrays her as New Donk City's adult mayor and bandleader.
This suggests Bananza may precede Odyssey, chronicling how DK helps Pauline return to the surface world. Their complex relationship - historically victim and kidnapper since the arcade original - may receive new context in this adventure.
Composer Grant Kirkhope told Eurogamer he was unaware his infamous DK Rap would feature in Bananza. "The worst rap track in history makes its comeback!" joked the musician, surprised by its current popularity after initial criticism during DK64's release.
Kirkhope humorously predicted his legacy: "My tombstone will mention the DK Rap and Goldeneye's pause music - nothing else!" The composer recently experienced similar credit issues when the rap appeared uncredited in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, despite his negotiations with Nintendo.
Music plays a core gameplay role in Bananza, powering DK's transformations. Alongside the iconic rap, players can enjoy Pauline's musical performances via an in-game music player.
